When you have to drill through closed-up ceiling or wall cavities to run telephone, cable or speaker wire, it’s difficult to figure out how to line up the entry and exit holes. Solve this problem by making a wire coat hanger bit for your drill. Cut the long straight section from a coat hanger, leaving a chiseled tip on the ends. Chuck the wire into a variable speed drill and drive the holes. Use a slow speed to avoid bending the wire. It’ll even drill through carpet without snagging. Easy does it: Stop the drill after going through the first side and push the wire through until it hits the other side. It you feel the wire hit obstacles (ducts, pipes or wires), try another spot.
