Dave Munkittrick is justly proud of his 4 x 8-ft. assembly table. At one point, he was ready to resurface its scarred 20-year-old top, but instead he had the brilliant idea of throwing a sheet of 3/4-in. melamine on top and screwing it down. “I can write on it—it erases easily— and when I clamp glue-ups, the dried glue drips pop right off with a chisel,” Dave says. “Varnish drips and spills don’t stick either. Heavy projects slide around on the slick surface for easy positioning.” Dave used two-sided melamine so he’ll be able to unscrew the top when it’s finally worn out, and flip it over to expose a brand new surface. A 4 x 8-ft. sheet of melamine (plasticcoated particleboard) costs about $35 at home centers.
