Reader Tom Johnson showed us a slick, no-mess way to spray-paint wood or metal projects. It’s a knock-down portable wardrobe ($24 at a home center) that traps overspray and makes even your kitchen or family room a reasonable place to spray-paint.

Buy a “windowed wardrobe” —one with a small strip of clear plastic at the top—so you can see what you’re painting. Buy a few suit hangers ($1.50 at a grocery store) and secure the project parts to the hangers with the hanger clips. Pull a rubber glove onto your spraying hand, zip the spray booth doors closed around your wrist and push the button. Paint one side, then spin the hangers a half turn to expose the unpainted sides.
Caution: Open windows in the room to ventilate painting area.
