Reader Project: Backyard Stone Fireplace
It may look like the work of a veteran mason, but this backyard stone fireplace is JohnGolocks first big masonry project.
It may look like the work of a veteran mason, but this fireplace is JohnGolocks first big masonry project. Its basically a concrete block shell, linedwith firebrick inside and covered with manufactured fieldstone outside. Thehearth and mantle are faced with manufactured flagstone. John cut some ofthat flagstone to make the matchingbricks and keystone that form thefireplace arch. For easy fire-starting,John ran a gas line to the fireboxand installed a log lighter under thegrate (available at fireplace stores oronline; search for log lighter).
I kind of amazed myselfwith this one. SometimesI look at it and think: Did Ireally build that? John Golock
