Fred Beal is a highway engineer,so when he needed abridge for his Montana home,he designed and built it himself. With help from his wifeand son, he first built a huge plywood form. Then he castthree steel-reinforced concretearches (which average about8 tons each!).To dress up the sides of thebridge, he set cultured stoneinto the wet concrete. Whenthe three arches were cured,a hired crane set them intoplace, resting on a pair ofthick concrete footings.

Its strongenough for anytraffic, even the35-ton rig thatdrilled our well. Fred Beal
