Reader Project: Timber-Frame Shop
From planning to finishing, Mike spent three years on his shop. He had lots of help from friends, but hired pros only for the slab and roof.
Mike Pado has been a metal guy for decades, first as a fabricator, then as an engineer. But that didn’t stop him from tackling this 1,200-sq.-ft. wood frame building. It’s framed from rough-cut 6×6 that are joined with metal sockets (Strongtie is one manufacturer; StrongTie.com). From planning to finishing, Mike spent three years on his shop. He had lots of help from friends, but hired pros only for the slab and roof. Now that it’s done, he’s back to metal and mechanical work.
“I had never built anything bigger than a doghouse from wood—this was a real learning experience.” — Mike Pado
