John Whites family has hosted severalforeign exchange students, allof whom have claimed that Americaneeds better bread. So, as a steptoward strategic bread superiority,John built this traditional wood-firedoven. Under the brick and stone exterior,its made mostly from concreteblock and firebrick. The slate roofshingles were salvaged from an oldbarn. The big mass of masonry takesabout four hours to reach baking temperature.Although its designed forbread, the oven is great for bakingother items, especially pizza.
