One of the first things you need to do before repairing or replacing a toilet is to drain all of the water from the tank and bowl. Family Handyman’s go-to plumbing professional Les Zell says that he reaches for his wet/dry vac to drain the water quickly and with as little mess as possible.

Be sure to switch your vacuum’s settings to liquid, and then place the hose into the tank and bowl to remove all of the water.
