Choosing a Garden Hose
Kinks, leaks, cracks, punctures, rusted couplings and burst tubes — garden hoses can be a source of frustration for many homeowners. Though they may all look alike, there are some important differences that can make a big impact on how easy your garden hose is to use and how long it lasts.
When choosing a new garden hose, look for these features and consider spending a bit more for a quality hose that can last five to ten years. Here’s what you need to keep in mind when garden hose shopping.
Material: Opt for the more durable rubber (latex) over vinyl, and spring for a model that’s reinforced with a mesh lining between rubber or vinyl layers if your home has high water pressure.
Strength: Choose a burst pressure (the maximum water pressure the hose can handle without bursting) of at least 350 psi and/or 10 bar.
Flexibility: Kinking is a hassle and can cause damage to your hose, so opt for a hose that’s flexible enough to store and maneuver with ease, but not so floppy that it kinks at every turn. Reinforced rubber hoses are less likely to kink.
Couplings: These end pieces that connect your hose to spigots, sprinklers and nozzles have to be tough to withstand high water pressure without leaking, cracking or breaking. Cast brass is the most durable type (cast brass is thicker than stamped brass and octagonal to fit a wrench), followed by stamped metal. Avoid plastic couplings, which can’t be tightened properly and are most likely to break.
Length: Buy the shortest hose that will do the job (25 feet for a deck or patio and 50 feet for the average yard) to make it easier to maneuver and drain when it’s time to store the hose for the winter. If you need a longer hose, buy two shorter hoses and join them together for more ease of use.
Diameter: Most garden hoses have an internal diameter of 3/4 inch, 5/8 inch or 1/2 inch. For the best water flow, pressure and maneuverability, opt for a 5/8 inch as wider hoses tend to be heavy. For a lightweight option for watering potted plants and flowers, a half-inch hose is best.
Flexi Hose with 8 Function Nozzle
The Flexi Hose garden hose expands to three times its length when you turn the water on. It’s available in seven colors and three lengths. Four layers of latex protect it from punctures. The included nozzle has eight versatile functions, so you can use it to clean off your patio floor or to wash your car.
Sarah, an Amazon verified purchaser says, “I bought a couple of these in different lengths. The hoses are so lightweight that I can drag them around to do whatever I need. So can my 4- and 2-year-old grandchildren. They love helping me and the adjustable spray head means they don’t kill my plants.”
Flexzilla Garden Lead-In Hose
This heavy-duty yet lightweight garden hose is perfect for both summer yard work and playtime. It ranges from three to 75 feet in length so that you can find the right size for your yard. Bonus? The neon color makes it easy to spot when stretched out across the grass lawn.
Pat OBrien reviewed it on Amazon, “It is lighter and much easier to drag around the yard, so I am glad I spent the extra money and purchased this one.”
POYINRO Expandable Garden Hose
Here’s an affordable expandable hose, this time in a pretty green color. It comes in four lengths: 25, 50, 75 and 100 feet. This expandable garden hose is under 20 bucks, and it comes without an adjustable nozzle. The triple-layer latex core prevents punctures and leaks.
Listen to verified Amazon purchaser, Just Me, (and check out their video of the hose in action.) “I was really floored at the power of this hose. I figured with it being made of soft material that it might not be able to handle the water pressure. Boy was I mistaken.”
Bionic Steel 100 Foot Garden Hose
This stainless steel garden hose has a luxurious look, and it’s practical too. It’s ultra-durable, with leak, puncture and rust resistance. It might look heavy, but it weighs under seven pounds.
Cactus Mama says, “I live in the desert where the sun will destroy hoses in one season, so was really interested in this hose. I haven’t been disappointed! The hose is so much lighter than I expected, and is easy to use and easy to coil up when I’m finished.”
My Garden Provisions Expandable Garden Hose
The My Garden hose is a 50-foot expandable hose that’s lightweight and flexible. It offers supreme mobility so you can handle watering tasks with ease. Made of a double-latex inner tube that’s protected by an outer layer of high-quality polyester, it expands up to three times its length once the water is turned on. Another added benefit is the nickel-plated, solid-brass connector that adds an extra layer of protection against rust, corrosion and leaks.
“This hose is awesome!” says Paula B, an Amazon reviewer. “I have tried every garden hose out there and inevitably I end up in a one-sided verbal argument with it because it’s kinking up and I have to walk all the way back and un-kink it in 20 places. Then I turn it on and then it kinks again and it’s an absolute nightmare. This hose is super reliable. It never kinks up, the flow is great. I am so excited I’m going to order two more one for my front yard and one for the side yard. I would highly recommend this hose.”
Kurtvana Garden Hose
This ultra-durable and heavy-duty garden hose is made with a pipe, brass connectors, valve, nozzle and spray that won’t rust, leak, tear, rip or crack. The rubberized outer coating is slip-resistant. The knob features water control and a rotating bezel to easily change the water pressure and spray type. The hose quickly expands up to 75 feet with water pressure and returns in minutes to its original length when the water is turned off.
“This is a really nice hose,” says SL, an Amazon verified purchaser. “It’s lightweight but it’s very high-quality material and I really like that it is so small when it’s not in use but yet it gets very large and strong when you turn the water on.”
Some major issues with expandable hoses are the joints leaking and the interior water pipe bursting. So it makes sense so much emphasis is put on designing newer models with superior strength. This garden hose uses extra-strong brass connectors and a four-layer latex pipe. It’s also capable of withstanding high temperatures (up to 120° F) and 12 bars of water pressure. Plus, it can expand up to three times its original length. It has a 10-pattern hose nozzle that includes a soaker, angle, mist, center, full, flat, shower and cone. Keep it all organized with the hook hanger and drawstring bag.
“This is the best hose I have ever bought,” says a verified Amazon purchaser. “I garden and do all my own yard work and this purchase was worth every penny. I have purchased multiple hoses in the past that said they would never kink and break like they always do. This hose is extremely flexible, lightweight, and made very well. I have been using it almost every day for the last 2 months and I love it.”
M JJYPET Expandable Garden Hose
This garden hose features a triple-layer latex core and polyester fabric, so it resists curling, twisting, knotting and leaking. The expandable hose starts at 25 feet and, when the water is turned on, quickly expands to 75 feet. It features superior 3/4-inch brass fittings, internal rubber gaskets and a 10-pattern hose nozzle for washing your car, watering flowers and vegetables, cleaning windows, washing your pet and more.
“Exactly what I was looking for at a very reasonable price,” says a verified Amazon purchaser, Panther. “The product is deceiving in size, but once the water pressure builds up, it produces a solid stream of water.”
TheFitLife Flexible and Expandable Garden Hose
This premium garden hose has triple-layer latex that makes it flexible for maneuvering all over the yard without the complications and frustrations of tangles, twists and kinks. It’s outfitted with crush-proof brass couplings and a leak-proof rubber seal. With an eight-setting spray nozzle, it’s a great hose for multi-use — watering plants, washing cars or hosing down muddy pets. It can work with water pressures of up to 145 psi/10 bar and has been endurance tested for 2000.
“I’ve had expanding garden hoses in the past, but this one is the best I’ve used,” says Stephen, an Amazon reviewer. “It’s well built, with brass connectors, giving the impression that it will last quite a while — because the material is of greater quality, and heavier, and the internal core is stronger. I’m very happy with this.”
Colrasn Expandable Garden Hose
This garden hose is made from high-quality, durable, leak-proof materials that ensure it will last, plus it comes with a 12-month warranty. It features an extra flexible polyester fabric cover that protects the thick latex inner tube and allows expanding of the garden hose up to 75 feet. The nine-pattern spray nozzle has a non-slip rotating bezel to adjust the setting and TRZ rubberized handle to make it more comfortable to use.
“I have ordered several different kinds of this style of hose and, so far, I like this one the best,” says Jules of the Night, a verified Amazon purchaser. “In its resting phase, it’s quite short. Turn on the faucet and it expands as it should and the pressure at the end is perfect. I like my tools to do their job without complaint or having to argue (kinked hoses). This is a great hose.”
