Types of Luxury Campers
It’s possible to spend the night outdoors without roughing it in the woods. With roomy tents, high-end camping gadgets and luxury campers, glamping — or glamorous camping — has never been easier.
There are several types of luxury campers on the market. Some extremely luxurious motorhomes are available, too, but we’ll stick to these detachable units and camper vans here:
- Pickup truck campers attach to the bed of a truck, typically extending over the cabin.
- Camper vans provide transport and sleeping accommodations in one vehicle. These are a popular choice for off-roading.
- Travel trailers are a tow-behind option that can be detached from the towing vehicle.
- Fifth wheel campers are another towable trailer, but these have a raised section that extends over the truck bed.
- Pop-up campers are a smaller option. They are compact for towing and storage, but fold out when parked to provide additional living space.
Best Luxury Camper for Pickup Trucks
The roomy Host Mammoth 11.6 truck camper features a comfort-first design. An enclosed bathroom with separate toilet and shower really makes this stand out. The Mammoth also has a large, open kitchen and dining area with ample camper storage space. This luxury camper is ultra-customizable, with optional add-ons like a laundry center, electric fireplace and exterior speakers.
Best Luxury Camper Van
Airstream, one of the biggest names in campers, and Mercedes-Benz, one of the biggest names in luxury vehicles, teamed to create the luxurious Atlas Touring Coach. Sharp attention to detail in the living and driving areas makes this camper van feel comfortable on and off the road.
A residential style bathroom and power slide-out Murphy bed provide a home-like feel. The kitchen space is small, but that’s to be expected in a camper van.
Luxury Adventure Van
The off-road Sportsmobile Classic 4×4 puts adventure first. The interior more closely resembles a traditional camper van, with a mini fridge, microwave and portable toilet storage compartment. The convertible sofa bed with seat belts, swivel passenger seat, pop-up penthouse and customizable finishes add a luxurious touch. The penthouse has a second bed that folds out above the sofa.
Best Luxury Travel Trailer
Since they’re “built from the ground up for full-time and extended-use,” according to the manufacturer, Living Vehicle travel trailers are the height of luxury. The 2021 Living Vehicle has more features than necessary for the average camping trip. But if you’re looking to spend lots of time glamping and have the budget and towing capability, it’s hard to beat.
The entry-level CORE model, which starts at $230,000, features built-in solar power with an estimated off-grid energy supply of one to two weeks.
Luxury Fifth Wheel Camper
Heartland is known for creating quality recreational vehicles like the Landmark fifth wheel camper. With five floor plans to choose from, it’s easy to find something to suit every traveler. There’s even an optional double oven.
The bedroom walk-in closet can accommodate a washer and dryer, although a portable washing machine or dryer would work too. With thoughtfully placed storage cabinets and tons of natural lighting, this luxury camper is anything but cramped.
Best Luxury Pop-up Camper
Pop-up campers have fewer frills than travel trailers or fifth wheelers, but come with smaller footprints and price tags. The Forest River Flagstaff series has both a hard side and a tent pop-up camper trailer. Both offer multiple floor plan options.
The Flagstaff’s Hard Side High Wall Series floor plans feature the best camper bathroom options, with a shower and cassette toilet. The same is true for the tent pop-up’s Mac Series and High Wall Series.
